Worship Services
Book of Common Prayer and Hymnals
During the school year, services are held on Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. The 8 a.m. service is primarily a spoken-word celebration; the later service includes music as a strong component. Christian education takes place during the 9 o’clock hour with separate offerings for both adults and children (Sunday school). Coffee Hour follows the 10 a.m. service. All are welcome to attend our services, and join us for coffee and snacks in Miller Hall following the 10 a.m. mass.
Our summer schedule (from June 19th 2011 through Labor Day) includes only one service, the 9 a.m. Holy Eucharist. There is no education hour, but Coffee Hour (now held following the 9 a.m. service) is a constant.
St Anne’s services are complete Eucharists, celebrating both the Word of God (Liturgy of the Word) and the Great Thanksgiving (Liturgy of the Eucharist).
A typical St. Anne's service follows Eucharistic Prayer II as described in our Book of Common Prayer. A more contemporary service, the prayer provides for a common English-based service, with some song, readings from scripture, a sermon, and Holy Communion.
St. Anne’s worship has traditionally meant a blend of so-called "high church" formality and somewhat informal ceremony. In the Green Bay area, where many residents have a familiarity with the Roman Catholic tradition, newcomers to Episcopal worship have commented that the services share a number of similarities.
The service begins with a procession and an opening song or prayer. The celebrant will greet us to the service, and lead us into the Gloria. We will then listen to readings from the Bible, called The Lessons. The First Lesson will be a reading from the Old Testament, followed by a Psalm from the Old Testament. We will then listen to a second reading from one of the Letters of the New Testament.
We then rise, perhaps sing an introduction to the Gospel (the Gradual Hymn), and then listen to the Gospel. After the Gospel, we will be seated to listen to the sermon.
After the sermon, we will rise, and profess our faith by reciting the Nicene Creed. We will then kneel, and say the Prayers of the People, followed by a General Confession. Following Confession, we rise, and greet each other with peace. It is very common for people to leave their seats, and cross the aisles to greet each other for peace.
After the Peace, we will often listen to the choir while parishioners bring forward the bread and wine to the altar, and then collect our offerings. We then begin the Holy Communion, kneeling through the Eucharistic Prayer, which is chosen by our priest and announced at this time. Following the prayer, and reciting of The Lord’s Prayer, parishioners proceed to the altar and kneel (or stand) at the Communion Rail.
After Communion, we pray, and receive a final blessing. We sing a recessional song (at the 10 o’clock service), and the mass is completed.
We do offer child care services during our services.
We worship the Eucharist on all Holy Days as defined by the Episcopal Church, on some American Holidays, such as an occasional Thanksgiving service, and on every Sunday of the year. Several times each year—for instance, the Sunday of our annual parish meeting—only one service is held. As the service time can vary, please check the calendar for the current service schedule.
