Elected Leadership

The Episcopal Church has a strong democratic tradition dating to the time of the Revolutionary War. Many of our nation’s founders also contributed to the founding of the Episcopal Church following the war.

Today, elected lay leadership at the parish level is responsible not only for the business side of church operations and setting policy, but also for hiring clergy. These lay leaders work cooperatively with their priest, or rector, to establish and carry out the mission of the church. They also consult as needed with the diocesan bishop in guiding the parish.

St. Anne’s has a church council with 11 elected members, known as the Vestry in Anglican tradition. Vestry members serve three-year terms, with three new members elected each January by the parish membership at the annual meeting.

Additionally, two executive positions are known as the Senior Warden and Junior Warden. Each has different duties, according to both tradition and parish by-laws. In general, the Senior Warden functions as the Vestry chairperson and works most closely with the parish rector, while the Junior Warden has more responsibilities with operational issues and the larger congregation. These offices are elected annually, up to a maximum of three years of successive service.
